The Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (SCSU) is the not-for-profit organization that represents all full-time and part-time undergraduate students at the University of Toronto Scarborough and provides to its members a broad range of advocacy, services and events.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Chair (Speaker) of the Board of Directors is responsible for ensuring the effective governance and orderly conduct of Board meetings in accordance with the SCSU’s by-laws, policies, and Robert’s Rules of Order. The Chair facilitates Board and Members’ meetings, ensures adherence to procedural and constitutional standards, and supports the effective functioning of the Board and broader democratic engagement of the membership. The Chair shall be appointed by the Board of Directors on the recommendation of the Executive Committee. The Chair will serve until the Joint Board Meeting held no later than April 30.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as the primary facilitator at all meetings of the Board of Directors, maintaining order and guiding discussions based on established rules and organizational policy.
Chair the Annual Members Meeting (typically held in November) and the Winter Members Meeting (typically held in March), ensuring they are conducted according to governing documents and parliamentary procedure.
Interpret and enforce the organization’s by-laws, policies, and Robert’s Rules of Order to ensure meetings are conducted fairly and efficiently.
Act as the final authority on matters of procedure and constitutionality during Board and Members’ meetings.
Serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Board of Directors.
Support the development of Board agendas in collaboration with the Vice-President Operations.
Foster an inclusive, respectful environment where all directors and members are encouraged to contribute effectively.
Ensure accurate documentation and follow-through on Board decisions and actions.
Availability to attend and facilitate regular Board meetings.
Availability for the Annual Members Meeting (November) and Winter Members Meeting (March).
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Must not be a current undergraduate student at the University of Toronto or any of its campuses, including the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC).
Prior experience facilitating meetings and strong understanding of parliamentary procedure (preferably Robert’s Rules of Order).
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Impartial, diplomatic, and committed to fairness and transparency.
Familiarity with non-profit governance and student-led organizations is an asset.
