Benefit students now and in the future

YES. Whether you are an avid sports participant, a studio dancer, a performing artist, or simply a student seeking study space, you will be positively affected by this new complex.

The benefits of the partnership to UTSC students are many. Some of them have been noted on other pages of this site. Here’s a recap and some new benefits to consider:

  • UTSC students would share in an athletics and wellness complex that is more comprehensive, a higher standard, and more extraordinary than anything we could have possibly achieved independently.

  • Sports and recreation participation opportunities will be dramatically increased, for UTSC students and UTSC alumni.

  • The sports and recreation complex is one part of a larger plan for campus redevelopment and renewal. The University has begun a master plan to identify a comprehensive list of priorities--ranging from new research and teaching facilities, to student residences and performance venues--that will be developed over the long term to ensure a robust and comprehensive student experience is able to thrive at UTSC. The entire campus master plan is estimated to be valued at over $750 million.

  • A major sports and recreation complex promotes a healthy campus. There’s no time in your life more appropriate than your university days to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Your physical and mental wellbeing are intricately related. With access to more facilities, coaches, and instructors, as well as a supportive network of friends, you’ll find the new complex makes it easier to incorporate fitness into your university experience, and positively influence your academic performance.

  • Benefit of additional spaces freed in other locations throughout campus

  • As partners with the community, UTSC students would also contribute to positive goodwill and a renewed sense of pride within the entire eastern GTA.

  • Students will find numerous job opportunities from customer service staff and life guards to specialized trainers and program instructors.

  • With the Pan Am Games, our Ontario and municipal governments will make it a priority to bring Light Rapid Transit (LRT) right to the heart of our campus, and decades before it is currently scheduled to reach our area.

  • Access to St. George campus would be dramatically improved through new TTC and GO Transit connections.

  • The new sports and recreation provides UTSC with an opportunity to work with academic colleagues across the university to assess the potential for collaborations with existing programs; new programs that build on the existing strengths at UTSC, such as a sports management program; or new joint programs that draw on the leading edge expertise associated with the CSIO, such as a masters degree in high performance coaching.

  • Given the scale of the facilities, it is expected that adjacent facilities, such as food services and residence and conference facilities will be possible.

  • Increase profile and reputation, and attract more great students to UTSC given the promise of a more robust student experience
