There was a lot of reading to do for this course. Professor Kortenaar was very enthusiastic about the material, but jumped between topics during lectures. Overall, an exciting course with an exciting professor.

Students described Professor ten Kortenaar's enthusiasm for the course material as 'contagious'. They were inspired by his teaching and appreciated the efforts he took to answer all students' questions. Many found his expectations to be reasonable and felt that he communicated effectively with students. A few would have liked to see better explanation of the grading scheme. Nevertheless, students would recommend this course to their peers.

Most felt he struck a good balance between lecturing to the class and allowing room for discussion, though a few students felt discussions detracted from the material at times. In a few cases students also reported the reading was a bit too extensive.

Students in this class were very positive about Professor Kortenaar. Quite a number referred to either seeking out his classes deliberately or else planning to do so. Several reported that despite his obvious expertise he is very open to other ideas and as a result students are encouraged to participate without fear of being 'wrong'. Many found considerable value in the weekly assignments (micro-compositions) as a means of keeping up with reading, an indication of standing in the course, and as writing practice. Many also indicated that the required reading was generally quite interesting and diverse.

Many students in this course appreciated Professor Kortenaar's knowledgeable and sensitive approach to an often underrepresented voice in literature. As in his other courses most students found the micro-compositions to be an effective grading mechanism and means of keeping up with the material. A couple students mentioned that the name and content of the course were a bit intimidating but definitely did not regret taking a chance on the course. Several remarked on their desire to take more African literature at the D-level with Professor Kortenaar, if possible.

Professor ten Kortenaar was showered with praise from students for being passionate, knowledgeable, and helpful. Students enjoyed that the texts were written by authors of different ethnicities and that they varied in style and found that the professor's thoughtful insights made even the difficult material interesting. Furthermore, the professor was noted to have welcomed input and observations from the class and facilitated a wide array of discussions. Moreover, students found that the micro-compositions enticed them to keep up with the course readings.
