As always students enjoy Professor Leonard's course and instruction. Many describe him as the kind of professor who changes their outlook on life beyond the subject area at hand. Some were not happy with the grading outline and felt too much emphasis was placed on a single, long essay in the midterm. Others comment that Leonard's popularity becomes a problem as his office hours are insufficient and he is inconsistent with e-mail, but most consider these to be problems they are more than willing to live with in exchange for his instruction.

Professor Leonard received considerable praise from students in this course, with frequent suggestions that he teaches 'life lessons' as much as 20th century literature. Some noted that concepts are dealt with at a fairly high level and the material is certainly not easy, but Professor Leonard's style and presentation help to make it accessible. A few suggested that limited or irregular office hours were a problem at times, owing to the popularity of the professor and the material. Regardless of minor concerns, many cite this as their favorite class to date.

Students in this course were quite pleased with Professor Leonard's lecture style and personality as an instructor, and several noted that they took the class specifically because of him. The two recurring concerns related to feedback on essays and a desire for more detailed grading on them and a feeling that too much time was allowed for in-class presentations. Students found Professor Leonard's enthusiasm for the material to be 'infectious.'

Many students have a great affection for Professor Leonard and several reference the fact that this was their third or even fourth course with him. Of course those students who are seeking him out were mainly satisfied with their experiences in this course. Most comments reflected on the unusual nature of this course, which was taught by two professors and cross-listed under different codes (the other was VPHC48, with Professor Carney) and many students felt this was not effective. A few students reference a sense there was a certain 'power struggle' at times and felt they would be better off with just one instructor. Several students also note that in-class presentations were lacking in value for the class as a whole and took up too much time. Still, most found the material interesting, as well as simply enjoying Professor Leonard as usual.

Students actually had many concerns about this course and it is due only to Professor Leonard's remarkable popularity (often called 'outstanding' by students) that there weren't more complaints or problems. A number of students were clearly confused about course expectations in terms of the nascent cinema program vs. more mainstream English. Some also cited a lack of organization as a problem. This course focused on the Vietnam War in film and as the course title and description are more general quite a few students did not know this going into the course and so some were confused or felt out of place. Others simply felt the material was too brutal. Nevertheless, between those students who would willingly listen to Professor Leonard teach anything at all, those interested in cinema (minor program pending), and those who 'got' the course most were happy regardless and found it a valuable experience.
