Professor Smyth was described as a quality instructor, and some even felt that the class felt like a grad school preparatory course. Students highly appreciated his knowledge of the subject matter. However some suggested not making the textbook mandatory, as the midterm focused on lecture material.

Students found the course material to be intense and suggested that Professor Smyth present the material at a slower pace, as well as post up lecture notes ahead of class in order to make it easier for students to follow along.
