Students felt that the workload in this class and the difficulty of the material was a barrier but they were extremely happy with Professor Tawfiq's experienced and knowledgeable approach. They felt he contributed a lot to their ability to grapple with the material, offering extensive time and availability, and they single out their tutorial TA, Sergei Kruglov, for similar praise. Students were far less happy with the quality of their lab supervision and felt it was far less encouraging to work in their labs as a result. Although a required course for most students, several mentioned they found the material more engaging than expected, as a result of quality instruction.

Students express some appreciation for the idea behind Professor Tawfiq's instruction but feel, in this case, it was inappropriate to expect students to learn extensively on their own. Citing the very high level of material students felt they were often left adrift without enough guidance or opportunity to practice independently because they were unable to even start. Some felt Professor Tawfiq expected too much from an introductory class in this area. Still, they acknowledge his enthusiasm and genuine desire to lead this course as well as possible.
