Students generally felt Dr. Valko was effective in his explanations of concepts but suggested he could be clearer with his writing and work on specific problems. Several noted the workload, with weekly assignments, was unusually high. Feelings about tutorials were extremely mixed, no doubt owing to a variety of TAs.

Overall, many students were quite dissatisfied with the course. Aside from the fact that many students found the material very challenging, they were dissatisfied with the approach Professor Valko took in order to present the material: lecturing verbatim using the book’s proofs rather than providing examples of the application of the proofs. Thus, students found the assignments took long to complete, and the exams did not accurately reflect the material. Many students found the tutorial quite valuable. One suggestion students have for Professor Valko is to provide examples of how the proofs can be applied to mathematical problems and to real-life as well.

Students in this course report a large portion of the class relied heavily on the text rather than lectures, in part because lectures were following the text closely in any case. The suggest Professor Valko's handwriting was an issue on the board and propose more use of overheads to alleviate this.
