Students thought Professor Lowman gave interesting and informative lectures. They thought that he explained concepts well, was very organized and was very knowledgeable of astronomy. Although this course did not require any prerequisites, some students without a physics/science background found this course difficult. Some students also thought that tutorials did not help cover questions on the course material. One suggestion students had for Professor Lowman was to correlate the weekly assignments with the current week?s lecture topics.

Students thought Professor Lowman was an excellent and knowledgeable instructor. However, many found that the tutorials to be badly structured and that the assignments deviated from the course material taught in the class. Some students felt that the course was geared towards science students, even though it was not a pre-requisite in the calendar. Others felt that weekly tutorials were necessary to excel in the course.

Students enjoyed Professor Shepherd's lectures and consider him an entertaining and able instructor. Several students note there is a sizable mathematics component which they were not expecting and some found this challenging. Reactions to the tutorials were mixed, some feel they were valuable while others not at all (probably attributable to different TAs) but students seem to agree the message board was helpful.

Students found Professor Shepherd's teaching style well suited to the challenging nature of the lecture materials. However, students felt that the assignments were not reflective of the material, being more formula-based than necessary. Although students felt the tutorials were not of high value, the frequently updated website was very useful.

Students felt Professor Artymowicz brought a great deal of enthusiasm to this course but it was hampered by logistical details in a variety of ways. A frequent concern was the lack of regularly tutorial hours, which students say they needed to deal with assignments. Comments that lectures were too focused on theory with no opportunity to practice seem directed at the same problem. Additionally, students found the text very difficult and suggested a change to some alternative.

Students in this course emphasized the difficulty of the material and the need for a very solid basis in mathematics in order to be successful. Although at times feeling that the course was either too heavy or the expectations too stringent for a B-level course, students appreciated the instruction of Professor Shepherd and felt that he made the difficult course material more bearable.

Students found the course to be engaging, but thought that more examples would have been helpful. They would have also appreciated if assignments were handed back from the professor to the students on time.

Most student comments relate to lecture format and style, with a repeated concern that PowerPoint might not be the best tool for this course. Students reported an inability to take notes and generally to keep up with lectures. A couple pointed out that the subject matter of this course is simply quite large and that alone implies inevitable difficulties. Students generally acknowledged Professor Artymowicz's desire to see them succeed and to communicate the required material, despite suggestions for how that might improve in the future.

This course was commented on as being 'very hard'. Some students advised future students to review differential geometry as this course involves a whole section of it. Professor Shepherd was very helpful in explaining the concepts and clearing people's doubts. One student would have liked to see more lecture time allotted for this course.
