Overall, students enjoyed the class and thought that Professor Rockel was an effective lecturer and that the use of videos and guest speakers were really useful in helping them learn the material. However, many students also noted the poor performances of the Teaching Assistants in the tutorial, stating that they felt it was a repeat of the lectures as opposed to the more discussion-oriented environment that tutorials usually have.

Students found Rockel to be very knowledgeable, but found that too many topics were discussed and they were not studied in-depth enough. Students also felt that a mid-term would have been helpful and that having the class in a two hour session would have allowed Rockel to cover more material. The guest speakers were highly enjoyed.

Professor Iacovetta was considered to be very knowledgeable, and the course was very interesting. However, students felt that her lecturing style could be improved upon and that she moves too quickly sometimes. Students have requested that she post lecture outlines online, and that when she does, they need to be easier to use.

There were two points from the litany of comments provided for this course that respondents agreed on: (1) Professor Iacovetta was a wonderful professor and (2) the class was very interesting. However, the class was split on numerous issues. For instance, while many students stated that Professor Iacovetta clearly delivered lectures and effectively answered questions, others felt that she rushed through the one-hour lectures. Thus, some would have appreciated it had the lectures been two hours in length. Furthermore, some felt that the expectations of the Professor and of the T.A. were inconsistent. Other prevalent comments were that the marking was unfair, the texts were too difficult for a second year course, and that Professor Iacovetta's handwriting was hard to decipher.

Students felt that the course material was very interesting and some have commented on their interest in taking the second part. Professor Iacovetta was presented as very knowledgeable and engaging. However, some felt that the material was covered too quickly in the short amount of time and that posting lecture notes would have been helpful. Though respected for her enthusiasm in the course material, many students thought the learning experience would be greatly enhanced had the professor utilized more communicative methods such as the Intranet and e-mail. Other concerns were the effectiveness of the course texts, with many students claiming that a textbook would have been better suited for the class than the two novels, and the small amount of time they had to complete a series of long tests that covered a lot of material.

However, most of the students found the tutorials were not beneficial and tutorials hard to follow. The students believed that the tutorials were weighted too heavily in terms of marks, and there was too much material to read for the course. Students suggested that an outline would help with the organization of notes, and they also recommend the professor to use a microphone.

The few complaints with this course relate to general dissatisfaction with the grading scheme and too great an emphasis placed on the one paper worth 50%. Some students requested tutorials for the course as a way of additionally engaging with the material.

Overall, students seemed to enjoy the material covered in class, but comments were polarized in two areas: Professor Iacouetta's lecture style and the TA. For as many students who enjoyed her lecture style and praised Professor Iacouetta's organizational skills, just as many said she spoke far too quickly and was hard to follow. In addition, many remarked that the TA was helpful, but an equal and just as vocal number of students found the TA's grading harsh and a lack of feedback frustrating. Several students appreciated the professor's understanding of the workload placed on university students in allowing ample time for assignments and to better prepare for tests.

Students found that Professor Stephen Rockel’ s teaching style was exciting due to the multimedia he used to further elaborate on the lecture material. Most comments showed the fascination students felt while learning this new material taught for the first time, and according to almost 75% of the comments made, the prerequisites are unimportant for this course. However, students were mostly concerned with the heavy load in this course due to having three different reading sources to cover. Some had issues with the unorganized way and slow pace Professor Rockel taught in since it led to confusion to some students. There were also a lot of concerns with the TAs and a lot of aversion was shown towards their marking scheme. Some hoped for better tutorials that could’ve helped them out even more. Help could’ve been sought by students facing problems with their TAs from the Professor himself since he was also unanimously commended as helpful, knowledgeable and very understanding.

Students felt that far too much reading was required for this course and that, because the readings were so in-depth, they were only able to grasp their content once the professor discussed them in lecture. Professor Rothman was found to be enthusiastic and helpful. She also responded to questions very quickly. However, some felt that she had excessively high expectations and did not provide students with sufficient guidance. Some felt that the course could have been better structured and would have appreciated it had the professor provided more guidelines for pre-lecture preparation (i.e. key terms or events).

Reactions to this course were mixed. Most students felt that Professor Rothman attempted to cover far too much material in a short period of time. They also felt she assigned an extensive amount of reading. Further, several students complained that one book on the syllabus was not used at all. Nonetheless, Professor Rothman was deemed to be enthusiastic and helpful though she did not speak very clearly (which made it difficult for students to follow her lectures). Also, some found the key terms and themes she provided to be useful. However, some students noted that because the key terms and themes were only shown at the beginning of class, many students did not have the chance to write them down. Moreover, expectations and evaluations were found to be unclear and students disliked the use of Blackboard for the final essay.

A few comments indicate that two hours per week might have been insufficient to cover the material in the depth it invites.

As always, students seem to love Professor Eksteins. To quote one student: "He could teach a course on how grass grows and still make it interesting." (Editor's note: students in botany and environmental science, who may indeed study how grass grows, may be assumed to have interest in this subject naturally. From a history student it should be considered high praise.)
