Majority of the students felt that the course material was relatively hard, and that there was too much in one course. Students suggested that solutions to all questions be posted, questions of varying difficulty be assigned, and the professor should use the microphone to communicate better.

Students agreed that Professor Grinnell did an exceptional job of delivering the course material. They appreciated his approachability, but found his exams and tests to be very difficult. Students suggested revising the content of the assignments, quizzes, and exams, as well as providing typed lecture notes to save time during lectures.

Overall, many students were quite dissatisfied with the course. Aside from the fact that many students found the material very challenging, they were dissatisfied with the approach Professor Valko took in order to present the material: lecturing verbatim using the book’s proofs rather than providing examples of the application of the proofs. Thus, students found the assignments took long to complete, and the exams did not accurately reflect the material. Many students found the tutorial quite valuable. One suggestion students have for Professor Valko is to provide examples of how the proofs can be applied to mathematical problems and to real-life as well.

Several comments (and the numerical responses) indicate a general feeling that this was a very difficult course but Professor Butscher was cited as an enthusiastic instructor whose enthusiasm was contagious. A few students noted that the smaller class size contributed to a more collegial atmosphere with a greater sense of cooperative learning. Some requested more complete explanations of the various steps to each problem or most complete and detailed answers posted and made available, as they felt they lacked guidance on easier material they were assumed to know but might not.
